holy crap! that reminds me of something my psycho dog would do. he's forever growling at things that no one else can see and snarling when you pet him...when HE asks to be petted.
it's not really so funny to me the fact that there's a string involved kinda takes away..
and aside from that, i own a dog who is of a certain breed that most people fear, and a lot of places/counties/states have put bans on them based on those fears.
but it's things like this that piss me off. other breeds show this kind of behavior, and it's funny. people have dogs who growl ... at their humans and people find it funny.
In fact, after viewing this video a number of times actually looking for a string, I can't see how it would be possible for the leg to not jerk back when the head lunges for the leg the first two times. =(
likely, that animal doesn't see what's causing his foot to move and he's not biting himself to hurt.. he's trying to scare or find whatever it is because it's truly upseting him.. or her.
either way, that dog is disturbed, and i don't mean crazy.
What I meant by his leg jerking back is not by his own reaction, but by his head hitting a string which would cause the leg to jerk back each time his head hit a string, if one existed.
I'm not saying that there is no way possible that a string of some kind is involved, I'm just trying to see *how*. The leg is moving directly toward the head, not up or outward, and the head lunges right at the foot a few times. I would think the head would disturb the string which would cause the foot to jerk as well.
Humans are inherently mean. I wouldn't be surprised if a string was involved. But I did try to see a string over and over again. If a string is involved, I might actually be impressed.
I don't see a string either, but I don't see how any dog could be that dumb. I think that in some way it's being manipulated, maybe with fishing line so you can't see it? Something about it just doesn't seem right to me.
I don't know, I looked at it again and again, and I even just noticed that the foot rests under its ear a couple of times, and the ear doesn't move except when the toes touch it. If there was a string attached, I would think the string would move the ear when it crossed its path.

they will bite their own paws without flinching

But, if there is proof that there is a string involved, I will admit being fooled.
